In ‘Values for today’s world’, four key statements of values were suggested:
“People are more important than things”
“We should all serve the needs of others”
“Commitment is the bedrock of family life”
“Truth is the foundation of trust”
These, have been chosen on the basis of three overriding factors, namely that they:
- clearly respond to fundamental social needs
- will have the support of most people
- are nevertheless challenging to the way we live when it comes to them being applied to our culture. After all, we are after change!
The key question, at this point, is: how might they be applied and what would change as a result?
It is worth remembering that many changes have been successfully brought to our culture in the past. For example, by deliberate effort racial prejudice has been massively reduced; the way women are treated has been transformed; concern for the environment has been growing rapidly (with millions of people now recycling as a matter of course); fur coats, once the ultimate mark of success, are routinely rejected. Things can be changed! How, then, can we change things in favour of our four values?
