The charity (currently in the process of being registered) has been founded by Martin Graham and is supported by a board of trustees.
Martin was previously:
- head of political studies at the Jubilee Centre, Cambridge (1985-88), where he was involved in research and campaigning, principally on family issues;
- director of public affairs of the British Chambers of Commerce (1988-91), where he was spokesman for industry affairs (also editing a major business survey and doing frequent national TV news interviews);
- deputy director of the Conservative Research Department (1991-93), where he was in charge of ‘ghost writing’ for the prime minister, researched and wrote key publications and was in charge of the economic section;
- chief executive of the Kent Chamber of Commerce and Industry (1993-97), which provided representation and events for the business community, plus training, information and export services to 4,000 businesses in membership.
- founder and director of On the Move International (1998-2009), which brought churches together to offer free barbecues in town centres, feeding 430,000 members of the public in the UK (and many thousands of others in 27 countries), helped churches to serve and engage with their wider communities.
He holds a degree in political theory and government from University College of Swansea and an M Litt in political philosophy from Cambridge University.
Martin says “The issues surrounding Uturn UK have been on my heart for at least 25 years. I consider myself the luckiest person alive to be able to combine my work with my passion”.
Martin works with his wife Gina. They have four children, aged between 22 and 29, two married and two working on it!
Trustees are:
- Alasdhair Hedges (chairman), is a chartered surveyor and locates and develops sites for leading supermarkets and is vice chairman of the independent monitors of a local prison. He lives near Oxford and is married, with two grown-up children.
- Irene Elias, is a podiatrist and was formerly a teacher and a magistrate. She lives in Birmingham and is married, with three grown-up sons.
- Nick Hoult is pastor of a new church serving a group of deprived estates in southern Birmingham and recently built his own house (literally!). He is married, with two daughters aged 2 and just over 0!
- Ray Buick recently retired from his position as a paediatric surgeon at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and has also served as chairman of governors of a local school. He is married, with three grown-up boys.
