One of the key questions is “do values need faith?” Certainly, they came, in Britain, from faith roots.
But roots a matter, not just of history, but of nourishment. And, if we come to the conclusion - suggested by history - that values will not survive long without faith, can we actually swallow the implications of that? Christianity has a long and checkered history. Most of us are somewhat hazy as to what it actually says or means. Can we put our eggs in that basket in today’s Britain? How strong is Christianity today? Does it deserve to be reintegrated into the discussion of national values, given its record, both good and (In all honesty) bad?
